Taking high voltage under a major motorway junction - Generator Power

Taking high voltage under a major motorway junction.

The Challenge

A major fault developed underneath lane 2 of the M61 near Chorley and extensive repair work was required. Fifteen 100kVA generators were being used, which were cumbersome and expensive to run. So we were asked to replace them with one High Voltage (HV) generator.

The Solution

One of our specialist HV engineers carried out a site survey, liaising with Electricity North West’s site manager to find a suitable location. We also had to talk with British Gas in the area as a high pressure gas main was located nearby.

A HV generator was in place within 3 days. We carried out all of the necessary safety procedures, working with Electricity North West’s Senior Authorised Person (SAP). We added fencing and built a ground trackway to act as an earth mat. We also supplied a 20000 litre fuel tank to minimise the number of times the generator would need refuelling.
